Fatima's Courageous Journey: From Poverty to Empowerment By Sarah Sesay

Fatima dreamed of breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Her determination to pursue her dreams clashed with her mother's insistence on early marriage. Despite the challenges, Fatima remained steadfast in her quest for education.

At sixteen, Fatima's mother presented a suitor seeking her hand in marriage. But Fatima had other plans. She expressed her desire to continue attending school and achieve her West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and go on to university.

Undeterred by her mother's objections, Fatima sought the support of her mother's friend, Aunty Tenneh. Aunty Tenneh, however, advised her to obey her mother and marry the suitor, considering their financial struggles as an opportunity to secure a better future.

Yet, Fatima refused to abandon her dreams and eventually ran away to a caring family in Kortus who encouraged and supported her education. With their help, she prepared for her exams and met university requirements.

Fatima's commitment to her education paid off when she graduated from the university. She returned home, caring for her mother and spreading happiness to her family.

Eventually, Fatima found a loving husband, and together they shared a happy life with their child. Empowered by her education, she also started supporting other girls in her community to pursue their dreams.

Fatima's story is a testament to the power of determination and courage in the face of adversity. Her journey from poverty to education and empowerment serves as an inspiration to many, reminding us that with determination, support, and a belief in oneself, dreams can be achieved, and lives can be transformed.
