Drug abuse and addiction have emerged as significant issues affecting the youth of Sierra Leone. With advanced means of trafficking and easy access to drugs and substances, children between the ages of 8 to 17 years are increasingly becoming victims of drug addiction and trafficking. Despite efforts by the government, through the ministries of trade and industry, health, and the standard bureau, laws discouraging the sale of drugs to children and mitigating child drug consumption have faced challenges in implementation.
The unrelenting increase in drugs and alcohol use in the community, coupled with the lack of effective enforcement of laws, has resulted in a growing number of child drug addicts over the years. The devastating impact of drugs and substances was evident during the 11-year civil war, contributing to prolonged conflict, mental impairment among children and youth, and hampering the nation's development.
Recently, access to contraband drugs and substances like "Kush," "Jamba," "Pam Pas Water," and caffeine has become a threat to national security and the safety of future generations. Disturbing videos on social media show children engaging in indecent and unethical behavior due to drug-induced memory loss, leading to injuries, illegal activities, imprisonment, and even death.
A concerned parent, Ms. Kamara, shares her heartbreak over witnessing the effects of drugs on her son, who dropped out of school and turned to illegal activities after using Tramadol. These stories highlight the urgent need for action to safeguard the future of Sierra Leone's youth.
As the country faces elections and the menace of drug use persists, the future of the nation and its children is at risk. Drugs have been instrumental in promoting violence, unrest, crime, and illegal activities in the community. It is paramount for stakeholders and authorities to take stringent actions to ensure the implementation of local and national laws on drugs and contraband goods, preventing youths from falling victim to violence, abuse, theft, and other illegal acts.
Addressing drug abuse among Sierra Leone's youth requires collective efforts, from government agencies to community leaders and parents. By prioritizing the implementation and enforcement of drug-related laws, providing education and awareness programs, and offering support and rehabilitation services to affected individuals, we can create a safer and healthier future for our nation and its young generation.
